    UT Introduction

    Dadra & Nagar Haveli

Dadra and Nagar Haveli, blessed with nature's abundance, is a land of breathtaking beauty. It is home to lush green forests, winding rivers, serene waterfronts, the soothing melody of streams and distant mountain ranges, all creating a stunning kaleidoscope of flora and fauna. This tranquil haven offers an ideal escape for those seeking peace and serenity in the embrace of nature's magnificence.

In a strategic move to unite against the Mughals and strengthen their position, the Marathas formed an alliance with the Portuguese, leading to a historic treaty in 1779. Under this agreement, the Maratha Peshwa granted the Portuguese permission to collect revenue from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, a region comprising 72 villages, then referred to as "parganas." This was offered as compensation for the loss of the warship Santana, which the Marathas had captured but had not returned to the Portuguese despite their repeated requests.

The region was originally ruled by the Koli chiefs, who were later defeated by the Hindu kings of Jawhar and Ramnagar. Subsequently, the Marathas incorporated these territories into their kingdom. Spanning 491 square kilometers, Dadra and Nagar Haveli is landlocked between Gujarat to the north and Maharashtra to the south.
