    Fudam Bird Sanctuary, Diu

The Fudam Bird Sanctuary (FBS) initially proposed by the UT Administration of Daman and Diu in 1991 and finally notified in 2006. The area under FBS comprises a 244.59 ha of mangrove wetland patch located in the creek between the Diu Island and the Gujarat state in the western India. The area being an Ecotone, it has immense value in terms of floral, faunal, micro faunal and avian biodiversity. The creek area also acts as a buffer between coastal settlements and sea, protecting the town from inundation during heavy rainfalls. Due to falling in intertidal zone, the area has regular replenishment of micro nutrients necessary for survival of insects, crustaceans, fishes and animals, birds feeding on them.

The area has vast expanse of mudflats, mangroves which attracts numerous birds for foraging & nesting in the sanctuary area. Sanctuary is home to more than 200 native and migratory birds including flamingos, pelicans, stilts, cranes, terns, sandpipers, plovers, falcon, kingfisher, etc. Apart from these, sanctuary is also home to terrestrial fauna such as jackals, Nilgai, jungle cat, mongoose, wild boar, porcupine, etc. The sanctuary can be accessed by boat along the channels in the creek which also serves as an excellent birding site for nature enthusiasts and tourists.
